Which Hampton Roads intersections are the most frustrating for drivers? HRTPO has the answer

The organization gathered five of the most problematic intersections in the region, based on opinions from the public.

NORFOLK, Va. — Do you feel safe driving on roads in our region? That’s the question our region's top transportation entity asked drivers over the summer. Now, some of the results are now in.

You might have an area in mind that you drive through every day. Maybe it makes you feel a little uneasy on the roadways.

Sometimes, it’s clear why there are problems on the road, but other times, you can’t really explain it.

The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) wanted to find which intersections drivers are most frustrated with in Hampton Roads, among other safety issues they deal with regularly.

HRTPO called it the Roadway Safety Study, and participation in the survey exceeded expectations with nearly 1,500 people weighing in.

They were asked broadly about safety concerns on the roads, but also given the chance to identify the intersections they think cause the most problems.

Here are some of the most problematic intersections, based on opinions from the public:

  • Battlefield Boulevard and Woodlake Drive in Chesapeake
  • Holland Road and Rosemont Road in Virginia Beach
  • Colley Avenue and W. 26th Street in Norfolk
  • Mercury Boulevard and Coliseum Drive in Hampton
  • 39th Street and Roanoke Avenue in Newport News.

It’s important to clarify these aren’t statistically the most dangerous intersections in Hampton Roads.

While they are considered high-crash areas, these intersections were chosen by the public as areas they want to see more in-depth analysis on.

The data is being sent to officials in all seven cities so they can start the planning potential remedies based on driver feedback.

A full report should be released this January.
