All lanes back open on I-264 near Mount Trashmore following car fire

Firefighters arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. A man, woman, and child all got out of the car safely.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Drivers heading toward the beach may have encountered some extra heavy traffic on Interstate 264 in Virginia Beach on Saturday evening after a car caught on fire.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the fire happened on eastbound I-264 at mile marker 16.8, less than a mile east of the Independence Boulevard exit and near Mount Trashmore Park. The Virginia Beach Fire Department said crews were called to the location just after 7:15 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. A man, woman, and child all got out of the car safely. No one was hurt.

Several eastbound lanes as well as the entrance ramp were shut down for about an hour, but as of 8:30 p.m., all lanes reopened to traffic.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department is currently investigating what may have caused the fire.
