NORFOLK, Va. — A vehicle fire caused major delays on Interstate 64 East Wednesday morning.
All eastbound lanes on I-64 near 4th View Street close to the entrance of the HRBT were closed, but have since reopened. Westbound lanes on I-64 closed as well but have also reopened. Traffic on the MMMBT was experiencing major delays while crews continued to clean up of the fire on I-64 and rerouted traffic to I-664.
Norfolk Fire-Rescue, Hampton Fire, VDOT, and VSP were on the scene of the fire. Norfolk Fire-Rescue officials said the tractor-trailer had no hazards on board. They also say there were no injuries to the driver or responding firefighters.
An official from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) said the truck that caught fire was a "Highway Contract Route" operator carrying U.S. mail, some of which was damaged in the fire. It's not yet clear how much mail was damaged or destroyed, however.
The USPIS said if people believe their mail is missing, they can file a report on USPS.com.
Crews extinguished the fire with water and foam. Norfolk Fire-Rescue's Hazmat Team, the Coast Guard, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management will assess and mitigate any runoff into the bay or wetlands in the area.
