NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is going to lift most lane closures and pause most work zones on interstates and other major roads statewide for the Fourth of July holiday.
The changes will start at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, and will go until noon Friday, July 5.
While lane closures will be lifted in most locations, VDOT said semi-permanent work zones may still remain in place. VDOT has Travel Advisories that show the latest traffic alerts across Virginia.
According to VDOT's historical traffic data, the days of highest travel on the interstates are likely to be on Wednesday and Sunday, with moderate-to-heavy congestion likely from noon through 7 p.m. on those days.
VDOT also said routes to and from Virginia Beach will likely be congested between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the holiday period. VDOT has an interactive travel trends map that shows anticipated peak congestion periods.
