Traffic shift in Hampton begins Sunday

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), traffic shifts begin on Sunday and are subject to change depending on the weather.

HAMPTON, Va. — The City of Hampton is reminding drivers that traffic shifts in Hampton begin Sunday.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), closures in Hampton include:

Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, I-64:

  • Single-lane closures westbound Oct. 3 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.  

Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, I-664:

  • Alternating, mobile, single-lane closures southbound Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 
  • Single-lane closures southbound Oct. 1 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

High Rise Bridge, I-64:

  • Brief, intermittent stoppages eastbound Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. 

James River Bridge, Route 17:

  • Alternating, single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to as late as 3 p.m.:
  • both directions Sept. 30, Oct. 2-4 
  • northbound Oct. 1 

HRBT Expansion Project: 

Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels):

  • Go to Elizabeth River Tunnels for maintenance schedules on the Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58) and MLK Expressway (Route 164).  

I-64, Southside Widening, High Rise Bridge Expansion:

I-64, Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL): 

I-64, HREL Hampton Project:

  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-64 between LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) and the Hampton River Bridge Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 between midnight and 4 a.m. 
  • Full off-ramp closures Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from:
  • I-64 west to Armistead Avenue (exit 265B) 
  • I-64 east to Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) 
  • Long-term traffic shift toward the inside median on I-64 between Armistead Avenue (exit 265B) and Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) starting overnight eastbound Sept. 29 and westbound Sept. 30 View the full traffic alert.   
  • Long-term, continuous single-lane closure on I-64 in both directions remains in place, reducing travel lanes from three to two lanes between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A). View the full traffic alert.  

I-64, HREL Norfolk 1A Project:

  • Brief, intermittent stoppages on I-564 west between the I-64 interchange and Terminal Boulevard Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  
  • Long-term, full ramp closure from Tidewater Drive south to I-64 east, with new left turn at Thole Street to access I-64 east. 
  • Long-term traffic shift toward the inside median on I-64 in both directions between Tidewater Drive and Little Creek Road (exit 276).
  •  Long-term, shortened merge area at the northbound Tidewater Drive on-ramp to I-64 west. View the full traffic alert here.

I-64, Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes:

  • As part of the HREL Norfolk 1A Project, multiweek closures are in place in the Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes through mid-fall as follows. View the full traffic alert.
  • Full closure for westbound Reversible Express Lanes to the I-64 west mainline. All westbound Reversible Express Lanes traffic must exit to I-564 only.
  • Continuous single-lane closure in both directions between Tidewater Drive and I-564. 
  • Full ramp closure from I-64 east to eastbound Reversible Express Lanes.
  • Full closure in both directions: 
  • Consecutively from 8 p.m. Sept. 27 until 3 a.m. Sept. 29.  
  • Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. 
  • Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 
  • Consecutively from 8 p.m. Oct. 4 until 3 a.m. Oct. 7.  

I-64 HREL Chesapeake:

  • Full Express Lane closures on I-64 Sept. 29 to Oct. 6 from as early as 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
  • I-64 west from the I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange to Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289) 
  • I-64 east from Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289) to I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) 

I-664, Chesapeake:

  • Full closures of I-664 south on- and off-ramps at Pughsville Road (exit 10) Sept. 29to Oct. 4 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

I-664, Hampton/Newport News:

  • Full closure of I-664 north on- and off-ramps Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 from as early as 7 p.m. to as late as 7 a.m., with ramps not closed concurrently, at: 
  • Power Plant Parkway/Powhatan Parkway (exit 2) 
  • Aberdeen Road (exit 3)

VDOT said scheduled closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.
