Tractor-trailer crashes into I-64 jersey wall, then into trees in Newport News

The single-vehicle crash caused damage to two eastbound lanes near the J. Clyde Morris Blvd. exit and sent the driver, a man from Illinois, to the hospital.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Virginia State Police say tractor-trailer crash caused a big mess on 1-64 in Newport News Friday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m., a truck driver, who was traveling in the westbound lanes, drove into the jersey wall at mile-marker 258 near the Route 17 / J. Clyde Morris Boulevard exit, according to a VSP spokeswoman.

Investigators say the back end of the trailer swerved over the wall into the eastbound lanes before the entire tractor-trailer traveled across the westbound lanes and into the tree line adjacent to the interstate.

The incident caused damage to two eastbound lanes and sent the driver, a man from Illinois, to the hospital.

State Police did not know the extent of his injuries. As of Friday evening, he was still being treated at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The Virginia Department of Transportation, as well as local fire-rescue crews helped State Police clear debris from the roadway.
