25-year-old dead, another in serious condition after Newport News I-64 W tractor trailer crash

The crash occurred by exit 247 near Lee Hall around 3 a.m. There are major delays while crews are on the scene.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — According to VDOT, several lanes on I-64 West are currently closed due to a tractor-trailer crash. 

The crash occurred by exit 247 near Lee Hall around 3 a.m. Virginia State Police say that the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra was going westbound on I-64, ran off the roadway and struck a 2023 International tractor-trailer that was stopped on the closed shoulder. 

The driver of the Hyundai died on impact, says VSP. He was 25-years-old. The passenger has life-threatening injuries and was taken to Norfolk Sentara Hospital. 

The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.

VSP says all lanes are closed until further notice. VDOT says a detour is in place.
