HAMPTON, Va. — A four-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in Hampton injured four people on Friday morning, Virginia State Police (VSP) said. One of the crash victims was a state trooper.
The crash happened along the westbound lanes at mile marker 261 shortly after 9:50 a.m. According to VSP, two troopers were responding to an earlier crash when a tractor-trailer hit an SUV, drove onto the right shoulder, and hit one of the trooper's vehicles.
The SUV, which had slowed down for the previous crash scene, spun out of control and hit the second VSP vehicle. VSP said the troopers' vehicles had their emergency lights activated when the crash happened.
VSP said one state trooper had minor injuries and has since been released from Riverside Regional Hospital, while the second trooper and her K9 weren't hurt.
Three people from Hampton inside the SUV also had minor injuries, but medics treated them where the crash happened.
VSP identified the tractor-trailer driver as Jonathan Stell, a 61-year-old man from Mississippi, who has been charged with reckless driving. He was not injured.
The crash is still being investigated, VSP said.
