Smoke from 'rubbish fire' causes traffic delays on I-264E in Norfolk

The fire happened around 6:30 p.m. in a trash pile on Wellman Street, according to Battalion Chief Michael Murphy.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Fire-Rescue officials say smoke from a nearby trash fire caused traffic delays on I-264 Friday night.

The fire happened around 6:30 p.m. in a trash pile in the 100 Block of Wellman Street, according to Battalion Chief Michael Murphy.

"Crews made an assertive positional fire attack on mitigating this fire, keeping it contained to the area of origin, and not letting it progress further," Murphy said.

On site excavators worked fire crews to dig through the pile so they could put out the flames.

Murphy said smoke rolling over the eastbound lanes of I-264 caused some traffic congestion, but other than that, there were no other concerns.

"This is an unfortunate common occurrence when dealing with trash piles," Murphy said.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
