Virginia Beach man found dead after single-vehicle crash on I-64 exit ramp in Norfolk

Virginia State Police said they found a Toyota 4Runner lying on its side near the Eastbound lane of I-64 at a 264 Interchange exit in Norfolk, Wednesday evening.

NORFOLK, Va. — A man is dead after a single-vehicle crash on an Interstate 64 exit ramp in Norfolk Wednesday night, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

Around 7:17 p.m., VSP's Emergency Communications Center received a call about a grey 2019 Toyota 4Runner in the wood line along the exit ramp of I-64 East to Interstate 264 West.

The caller was a friend of the driver, 30-year-old Austin Trevor Hale, and told dispatchers that he had discovered the vehicle there after being concerned for Hale's safety and searching for him.

After not hearing from Hale all day, the friend said he went to Hale's last known location and traced his route home. That's when he saw skid marks on the side of the road and discovered Hale's vehicle laying on its side against a tree.

When Norfolk Fire and Rescue got to the scene, Hale was unresponsive.

Police say they don't know exactly what time the crash happened and they don't know if alcohol or speed were contributing factors to the crash.

State Police said Hale was a resident of Virginia Beach.
