HAMPTON, Va. — The first half of the new Mallory Street Bridge is now open to drivers in Hampton, after being delayed earlier this month.
Both eastbound and westbound traffic shifted to the newly constructed bridge Friday evening, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
It's another step forward for the ongoing HRBT Expansion Project, as the bridge's reconstruction will allow for the widening of Interstate 64 below.
Now construction crews will begin work on "phase two," which includes demolishing what's left of the old bridge and building a the second half of the new bridge.
VDOT said that construction will also include new earthen retaining walls, signals, drainage, and pavement, in addition to new pedestrian and bike lanes.
VDOT asks drivers to stay alert around the construction area.
Construction updates and lane closure alerts can be found at HRBTexpansion.org.
