HAMPTON, Va. — Drivers who take Interstate 64 near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) can expect a new traffic pattern in the coming days, as construction of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) project continues for the Hampton segment.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said that starting as early as Thursday, Oct. 24, westbound traffic on I-64 will be shifted left toward the median from the outside lanes to the inside lanes, to allow for continuing roadway work, drainage improvements, barrier setting and noise barrier construction.

This traffic shift will take place between the Hampton River Bridge and the North Armistead Avenue overpass bridge, and the traffic shift is expected to remain in place until summer 2025.

VDOT said that to complete the traffic shift, the I-64 west off-ramp to Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (Exit 265B) will be closed nightly from October 20 - 25, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. A signed detour will be in place.

VDOT recommends drivers use Interstate 664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible.
