National Stop On Red Week beings Sunday

The week looks to remind drivers about the dangers of running a red light and the importance of safe driving.

NORFOLK, Va. — Sunday marks the beginning of national Stop on Red Week

Started in 1995 by the Federal Highway Administration, the week highlights the risk of running a red light and how reckless driving can destroy lives.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2004 and 2018, vehicle accidents involving cars running red lights were responsible for over 11,000 fatalities in the U.S.

Traffic accidents in the Hampton Roads region are a major concern, as well. Red-light cameras and school zone speed cameras have been implemented across the region over the last couple of years to combat reckless driving.

Local drivers we spoke to said more needs to be done to protect everyone on the road.

"I have no problem with mandatory, every five years you go back and take another test for your driver's license," said Norfolk Resident Michael Freeman.

Drive Safe Hampton Roads, is a group that advocates for safe driving in our area. They're encouraging all drivers to remember to stop on red and spread awareness.
