NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — I-64 in both directions will be looking a little different by Armistead Avenue in the coming days.

Work on the eastbound direction of the interstate will begin as early as the evening of Oct. 27, the Virginia Department of Transportation said, for construction on the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project to continue. Three days later, it will begin on the westbound direction.

I-64 East

Crews will reduce the section of I-64 from the I-664 interchange to Armistead Avenue from three lanes to two, and drivers will be shifted left, toward the inside shoulder.

Additionally, the existing option lane, previously shared by I-64 east through traffic and I-664 south exit ramp traffic at exit 264, will change to a second "exit only" lane.

I-64 West

On Oct. 30, an additional lane reduction and traffic shift for I-64 west will extend the current two-lane road from Armistead Avenue through the I-664 interchange. The I-64 west off-ramp to I-664 south will remain in its current, one-lane configuration.

Drivers are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work areas on I-64, when possible. The lane changes are expected to last until fall 2025.
