NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Sunday is a big milestone for the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel: it turned 25 years old!
The bridge-tunnel complex on Interstate 664 connects Newport News and Suffolk, and was designed as another route connecting the Southside with the Peninsula, helping alleviate traffic on I-64's Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
At the time it was built, the bridge-tunnel was the largest project in state history.
According to our partners at The Virginian-Pilot, the busy bridge has more than 60,000 cars cross it per day. By 2040, it is expected to hit maximum capacity, with 75,000 cars crossing per day.
It is expected to last for at least another 25 years.
