Long-term traffic shifts begin soon around I-64 East ramp near Hampton University

The traffic pattern changes are part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project to widen essential roads and bridges.

HAMPTON, Va. — Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon start long-term lane closures on Settlers Landing Road, Woodland Road and a nearby I-64 east off-ramp.

The soonest change begins Monday. The I-64 off-ramp to Settlers Landing Road, or exit 267, will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Oct. 14 and ending Oct. 16.

Other changes below are estimated to be in place through late 2025.

Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road

  • Westbound (toward Downtown Hampton from Woodland Road), traffic will be shifted right, with Settlers Landing Road being comprised of two through lanes and a left-turn lane to I-64 east at the I-64 overpass.
  • Eastbound (from Downtown Hampton toward Woodland Road) will be reduced to a single through lane and a left-turn lane to I-64 west at the I-64 overpass.

I-64 East off-ramp to Settlers Landing Road (exit 267)

  • A long-term single-lane closure in place on the I-64 east off-ramp from I-64 to Settlers Landing Road (exit 267), with the two left-turn lanes temporarily reduced to one-left turn lane. The new ramp configuration to Settlers Landing Road will be comprised of a left-turn only lane, a through lane, and a right-turn and through lane.

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible. The construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent as well, so the schedule is subject to change, and if needed, additional lane closures will be implemented at off-peak hours at these locations, VDOT said.

The Hampton Roads Express Lanes project in the Hampton segment involves converting the three existing eastbound and three westbound general purpose lanes on I-64 into one express lane, one part-time express lane, and two general purpose lanes in each direction.
