Location and design public hearing on proposed plans for I-64/I-264 interchange

Phase III of the project will mostly impact I-64 headed east, near North Hampton Boulevard, the Twin Bridges, and the Greenwich Road Overpass.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)is hosting a meeting on Phase III of the I-64/264 interchange improvement project in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Community members can weigh in about the proposed plans. at a location and design public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 24, 4-7 p.m. at Lake Taylor Middle School, 1380 Kempsville Road, in Norfolk.

“I won’t even get on the interstate because it’s too congested… it’s not organized,” said Precious Langley, a commuter.

Langley said she knows delays on the busy interchange are common and plans accordingly.

“I would rather take the roads or take the back roads to get to where I am,” Langley said.

Claudia Walsh with VDOT said Phase III of the project will mostly impact I-64 headed east, near North Hampton Boulevard, the Twin Bridges, and the Greenwich Road Overpass.

“It will really improve traffic operations in that area,” said Walsh.

That's why Walsh and VDOT will gather reactions at the location and design public hearing.

"We’re looking for citizens' input on if this is helpful to them. Are they in favor of it? Or do they have suggestions?"

Emy Love Rodriguez hopes VDOT will limit construction work during peak hours.

“We have so many military installations, everybody’s traveling the same way, right, most of the time,” she said. “And that makes for a lot of traffic and even though they do new traffic patterns it’s still a nuisance.”

As for Langley, she hopes the conversation will enlighten commuters.

“Think about citizens like us who spent taxpayer money,” said Langley. “And be a little more informative to let us know exactly what’s happening.”

More information about the project can be found on VDOT's website.
