Traffic delays possible at James River Bridge this week during daytime lane closures

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation starting on Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be single-lane closures on the JRB.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Drivers crossing the James River Bridge (JRB) during the day this week could experience traffic delays due to planned lane closures.

Starting Monday and through Thursday, there will be single-lane closures on the southbound lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

On Monday and Wednesday, there will also be alternating, mobile, single-lane closures in the bridge's northbound lane from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

VDOT did not specify what work is being done on the JRB to cause the single-lane closures.

The Route 17 bridge connects Newport News and Isle of Wight County.

Drivers who want to avoid the closures altogether can take the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the James River Ferry as alternate routes.

Weather conditions may affect the lane closures, so make sure to check 13News Now's live traffic map for information on current road conditions.
