I-64 widening project between Richmond, Hampton Roads: 3 things to know

The project will expand the corridor from two lanes to three lanes with 10-foot-wide paved shoulders in both directions.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is breaking ground on another phase of the project to widen Interstate 64 between Richmond and Hampton Roads to address heavy congestion along the corridor.

In a November news release, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said the project would also increase capacity and mobility, improve safety and enhance connectivity.

Here are three things to know about the project and where it stands now.

What is VDOT's plan to widen I-64 in Virginia?

According to Youngkin's office, the project will expand the interstate in that area from two lanes to three lanes with 10-foot-wide paved shoulders in both directions.

The project is broken into three sections:

  • Segment A stretches from the line of Henrico and New Kent counties to just past Exit 214 for Providence Forge in New Kent County
  • Segment B goes south from there to the line of James City County
  • Segment C continues south to the line of York County

This project is a part of other widening efforts between Richmond and Hampton Roads, including 21 miles of widening in the Newport News area and five miles in eastern Richmond, according to VDOT.

Why is the I-64 Widening Project important?

Youngkin's office said the project will "ensure a seamless connection with the Port of Virginia" and the rest of the state and nation, as well as make travel and tourism easier for people.

The office also touted the economic development in progress along the corridor, including the Buc-ee's gas station that's coming to New Kent County.

“Transportation drives commerce, economic growth and connects Virginians across the Commonwealth,” Youngkin wrote. “Through continued investments in our local and regional communities, the I-64 Widening Project will help unlock the corridor to unify the Richmond and Hampton Roads regions and enhance job opportunities and economic prosperity."

How long will the Interstate 64 widening take?

According to VDOT, the anticipated completion date for all three segments is spring 2028. It has an overall budget of $756 million.
