Closures to impact I-64 Reversible Express Lanes in Norfolk

The closures are expected to begin as early as 5 a.m. Monday and traffic will be impacted for about seven weeks to allow for construction.

NORFOLK, Va. — This is a heads-up for drivers in Norfolk: closures will begin Monday morning on the Interstate 64 reversible Express Lanes between I-264 and I-564.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said a continuous single-lane closure will be in place for both directions of the Reversible Express Lanes just west of Tidewater Drive (exit 277) and east of I-564/Granby Street (exit 276).

For drivers heading east, the Express Lane entrance near Granby Street (Exit 276) will be closed. Drivers in westbound Express Lanes will not be able to exit to the I-64 general purpose lanes and will have to exit to I-564 instead. Westbound drivers heading to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel must use the general purpose lanes.

During this time, the city is lifting all westbound tolls for Express Lanes to make sure traffic does not get too backed up.

VDOT said the closures and roadwork are critical for completing the first phase of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Norfolk Segment 1A.

The closures are expected to begin as early as 5 a.m. Monday, September 9, and traffic will be impacted for about seven weeks to allow for construction.
