Deadly crash on I-64 near the HRBT in Hampton

Virginia State Police said three vehicles were involved in Wednesday's crash. A Norfolk woman was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

HAMPTON, Va. — A Norfolk woman died in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in Hampton, Virginia State Police (VSP) said.

The crash happened around 2:13 p.m. Wednesday on westbound I-64, east of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel's tunnel entrance. VSP said three vehicles were involved in the accident.

Police said that based on a preliminary investigation, a 2024 Volkswagen Jetta was driving in the left lane when it struck a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe from the rear. The Jetta ran off the roadway and hit a jersey wall, which pushed it back into traffic where it then hit a 2012 Ford F-150.

The driver of the Jetta, 49-year-old Tonya Denise Hinkle of Norfolk, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The drivers of the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation at this time.
