NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A firey tractor-trailer crash on I-64 in Newport News, caused traffic delays for hours Thursday morning as crews worked to put out the flames and clear the interstate.
Virginia State Police say the truck overturned around 7:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, and then the truck's fuel tank ignited.
The driver was able to get out of the truck safely and didn't get hurt.
Newport News fire crews were called to help with the emergency response.
All eastbound lanes and one westbound lane were initially closed between the Jefferson Avenue and Fort Eustis exits. And a detour was put in place, forcing all drivers to get off I-64 at exit 250A Fort Eustis.
Traffic backups stretched over five miles before state police reopened two lanes of traffic two hours later.
Newport News Police Department posted these photos of the cleanup.
