One person dead, I-64 eastbound lanes in Chesapeake reopen after crash

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the 2021 Freightliner began to fishtail and ran off the roadway into the median.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Virginia State Police were on the scene of a single tractor-trailer crash on I-64 eastbound in Chesapeake Wednesday morning. 

As a result, two of the left lanes were shut down at the 299-mile marker. That's near the Bower's Hill exit and interchange heading towards Suffolk and Newport News. 

The Virginia Department of Transportation placed a detour at the S. Military Highway exit. 

Police first got the call about the crash shortly after 6 a.m.  

The lanes were reopened later in the afternoon after crews had cleared the scene. 

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the 2021 Freightliner began to fishtail and ran off the roadway into the median. 

An update from Virginia State Police shortly before 8 a.m. confirmed that one person, the driver, had died.

He's been identified as Terrance Wardell Riddick, 58.
