VDOT suspends HRBT Expansion lane closures after major morning traffic delays this week

VDOT has suspended all lane closures within the HRBT Expansion Project corridor on I-64 until they can make sure their contractor can meet time requirements.

NORFOLK, Va. — After lane closures related to the HRBT Expansion Project caused significant traffic delays during the morning rush hour this week, VDOT says it's pausing all lane closures on I-64 related to that construction.

A Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman said that there was a delay in reopening I-64 to traffic after overnight lane closures on Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The first issue happened because a contractor's equipment failed and accidentally released material onto the roadway. The second issue was due to a complex bridge deck concrete placement taking longer than expected.

The VDOT spokewoman said they've suspended all further lane closures within the project corridor on I-64 until they can make sure their contractor can do the work within the scheduled lane closure hours.

She also said VDOT does sometimes give financial penalties to contractors that don't meet time requirements like this, but she didn't say if that would happen in this case.
