HAMPTON, Va. — All lanes have reopened on Interstate 64 East at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel after a multiple-vehicle crash Monday afternoon.
As of 3 p.m., there was still a three-mile traffic delay in the eastbound lanes, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The crash happened inside the tunnel in Hampton just before 12:30 p.m., Virginia State Police said, and at least one person — a motorcyclist — was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.
Norfolk Fire Rescue said 12 to 15 vehicles were involved, though, officials have not yet said if anyone else was hurt in the pileup.
Traffic was initially stopped in both directions as crews with Hampton Fire Division traveled east through the westbound tunnel to get to the crash scene in the eastbound tunnel.
The crash scene was cleared and all lanes of traffic were reopened just after 2 p.m., VDOT said.
State police say the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
The crash comes just days after a major traffic shift at the bridge-tunnel related to the expansion project; on Friday, all eastbound lanes were diverted onto a newly constructed trestle.
