Crash causes power outage for people in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia Beach Boulevard is now re-open between Birdneck Road and Oceana Boulevard after a driver crashed into a power pole Friday afternoon.

I heard the crash, and all I saw was lines and fire and then the line went down," said Edward Gore.

The accident happened in the 1050 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard. Over 5,000 Dominion customers were without power for more than seven hours.

Gore said, "Keep moving, you have to keep moving to keep warm."

He wasn’t the only one freezing. Other people in his neighborhood started a fire, or sat in their car and blasted the heat.

"How long have you been sitting in your car? Since I got home from school," said Derek Reyes.

He and his brother spent their Friday night in the back seat of their mom’s car, right in front of their home.

"We are watching a movie and being all bored," Reyes said.

Many said they don't have family in the area, or they didn’t have enough money to go somewhere warm. Crews worked to repair the line for hours, and around 8:30, power was restored to all the customers.

The road has since re-opened.
