CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Work is underway in the early stages of the Deep Creek Bridge Replacement Project.
Heads up drivers! You should expect some traffic changes starting Monday at 7 p.m.
Here’s what to look out for:
- The Moses Grandy Trail through lane on the west side of the bridge will close. The through lane will be combined with the left turn lane.
- Drivers can also expect lane closures on George Washington Highway North. The southbound through lane and right turn lane will close near the 7-Eleven.
- Additionally, the westbound right turn lane on Old Mill Road will be closed from George Washington Highway North to the south entrance of 7-Eleven parking lot. That will make Old Mill Road one-lane traffic in each direction between Westonia Road and the 7-Eleven.
Drivers in the area say traffic near the bridge is already headache.
One driver, Dave, said might change his route to work because of the lane closures.
“Moses Grandy [Trail] gets backed up from people coming over the bridge this way. But, I usually don’t have to deal with that because I’m going the opposite way coming home. But, I know starting tomorrow, it might be a problem because I work in Suffolk. So, I may have to find another way to get there.," Dave said.
While the traffic may cause some headaches now, some say it should be worth it in the end.
“I think it’s going to alleviate a lot of the congestion, especially right here at the intersection," Dave said standing at the intersection of Old Mill Road and George Washington Highway North.
Chesapeake city leaders say drivers should expect these traffic changes until March; however, this is just Phase 1 of the project. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2026.
