1 dead, 2 behind bars after crash in Hampton

The Friday morning crash happened west of King Street. Two suspects are in jail without bond.

HAMPTON, Va. — One person is dead, and two people are being held behind bars without bail in Hampton after a wrong turn led to a 4-car crash Friday Morning, the Virginia State Police said.

Police were called to investigate the 4-car crash in the westbound lanes of I-64 west of King Street Friday around 10 a.m., VSP said.

Initial investigations revealed that 21-year-old Mauro Francisco Zamora was driving a Ford E250 van when he drove into a lane that had already been closed off by the Virginia Department of Transportation for work resulting from earlier crashes, VSP said.

Zamora tried to merge back into traffic, and that's when he hit a 2020 Honda Civic. The driver of the civic then rear ended a 2013 Acura ILX.

The 29-year-old driver of the Acura, Lorenzo Arline II, lost control of the vehicle as it spun across lanes of traffic and hit a VDOT truck that was helping with the lane closure.

The drivers of the VDOT truck, and Honda Civic were uninjured. But, Arline was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, VSP said.

Zamora was arrested and charged with with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, failing to move over, operate a vehicle without a drivers license, and obstruction of justice.

Zamora's passenger, 48-year-old Francisco Mauro Zamora Barahona, was also charged with obstruction of justice.

Both people were taken to Hampton City Jail without bond, according to VSP.
