NORFOLK, Va. — A 16-car crash in the Downtown Tunnel Sunday around 1 a.m. left all eastbound lanes closed for around 3 hours, according to tweets from 511 Hampton Roads.
The group posted about the Portsmouth crash just after 1 a.m., and they said all east bound lanes were closed.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash resulted from a speeding vehicle's bumper falling off while it was driving through the tunnel. This caused the cars behind it to slam on the brakes and led to a chain reaction of cars colliding.
Three people were taken to the hospital, but they are expected to be ok, according to VSP.
The road was cleared and opened back up to traffic just before 4 a.m., VSP said.
This situation was still being investigated.
More information will be released as it becomes available.
