NORFOLK, Va. — Those in Hampton Roads awake at the crack of dawn may have seen the skies light up Wednesday morning.

The bright light was SpaceX's launch of its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 4:55 a.m. According to the spacecraft manufacturer, the rocket carried 20 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit.

"These satellites act as cellphone towers in space, eliminating deadzones without phone modifications or special apps," SpaceX wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Many also took to social media to share pictures of the launch, including Jennette's Pier on North Carolina's Outer Banks.

"By random chance caught a view of SpaceX Falcon 9 while having my morning coffee today in Virginia not too far from Virginia Beach," Ram Aikat wrote on X. "AMAZING."
