VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Chris Mills has done plenty in just his inaugural season with Virginia Beach United FC. The former Virginia Wesleyan University soccer coach guided VBU to its best season in the team's history and now he can add its first ever playoff win.
They would win over South Carolina United 2-1 in overtime in the USL 2 play-in game on Tuesday night. After a scoreless first half, the Bantams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 47 minute into the second half care of Frederic Benedix.
VBU would counter care of former Churchland High School Trucker Alexander Moody who got a header for a goal to tie the game at 1-1. They would force overtime, and it was in the second OT when Owen Ruddy got the game winner.
Virginia Beach United FC now moves on to the round of 32 where they'll face Salem City FC of Greensboro, North Carolina. It happens at Christopher Newport's TowneBank Stadium.
At 7:30, the host Lionsbridge will face the Western Mass Pioneers.
