NORFOLK, Va. — The No. 1 seeded Norfolk State women's basketball team defeated No. 8 seeded South Carolina State, 75-43, in the quarterfinals of the 2024 MEAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Wednesday.
The Spartans (25-5, 14-1 MEAC) have won 14 consecutive games over South Carolina State (2-28, 1-14 MEAC) since 2017 and have been on a 12-game win streak since Jan. 22.
MEAC Player of the Year, Kierra Wheeler, and MEAC Newcomer of the Year, Diamond Johnson, combined for 38 points in the win.
Wheeler had 19 points, seven rebounds, five blocks, and two steals on 8-of-14 shooting. The Spartans had a season-high 10 blocks with blocks coming from Wheeler, Skye Robinson, Paris Mullins, and Da'Brya Clark.
Johnson finished with 19 points to go along with five assists, six rebounds, and two steals. Eight Spartans recorded steals with five finishing with multi-steal games.
Winning by 32 points, the Spartans were extremely dominant on the defensive end. They forced the second most turnovers this season (31). Leading by as much as 29 points at its highest, the Spartans were in total control the whole game.
Coming up - The Spartans will play the winner of No. 4 Coppin State and No. 5 Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday at 12 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
