WASHINGTON — Jason Wright, president of the Washington Commanders, will leave the team after the 2024-25 season, the team said Thursday.
Wright's responsibilities as president include leading the business divisions, including operations, finance, sales and marketing.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it," Wright said in a statement Thursday. "We’ve set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh’s leadership. Over just the past year, we’ve welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."
Wright is a DMV local, who worked at global strategy and management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company, based in Washington, D.C. after retiring from football. When he was hired in 2020, he was the first Black president of an NFL team.
Wright spent seven years as a running back in the NFL with stops in San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland and Arizona, where he was the Cardinals' team captain and labor-union representative during the league's 2011 lockout.
“Jason has made a remarkable impact on the Commanders organization since he joined four years ago," team owner Josh Harris said Thursday. "He stepped in at a time of immense challenge and has led this organization through an incredible transformation that set that stage for everything that is to come. I am extremely grateful to Jason for his partnership to me and the rest of the ownership group over the past year. His guidance has been invaluable and his leadership has helped reshape our culture. I want to thank him for his dedication to this team, our fans and the community. I’m grateful to have his support through this transition period as we begin the process of finding the next president of this organization.”
Wright said he's proud to stay on with the team through the next season -- and to help the organization finish its search for a new stadium deal.
"This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity," Wright said. "I’m extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold.”
The search for Wright's replacement will begin soon.
