Thirteen Dallas Cowboys players will be among NFL athletes wearing custom cleats during this week’s slate of games for the “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign.
Players can wear cleats recognizing a charity or good cause of their choosing. After the Week 13 games, the cleats will be auctioned off, with proceeds going toward each cause.
Three Cowboy will wear cleats in honor of cornerback Brandon Carr’s foundation, “Carr Cares,” which has done work benefiting several causes from Dallas schools to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
Carr, Byron Jones and Terrance Williams will wear the cleats, which include a Dallas skyline design and the words “today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”
Rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott’s cleats are dedicated to the SPCA of Texas, an organization with which he’s already made an impact in his short tenure as a Cowboy. His cleats are complete with a picture of his dog, Ace.
Gavin Escobar hopes his cleats will raise awareness for testicular cancer, a disease he was diagnosed with when he was 18 and has since beaten.
Jason Witten will use his cleats to raise awareness about healthy relationships and mentoring as part of his SCORE Foundation, according to the Star-Telegram.
“My Cause, My Cleats” offers players the rare chance at individuality with their gameday uniform. The NFL doesn’t allow customized cleats on game days, and notoriously denied the Cowboys’ request to wear a patch on their jerseys honoring the Dallas Police Department during the regular season.
