Zellous, Robinson each run for 2 TDs as Hampton beats Norfolk State 37-7

The Pirates defense held the Spartans to 104 yards of total offense in the road win

Tymere Robinson and quarterback Chris Zellous each ran for two touchdowns Saturday and the Hampton defense allowed just 106 total yards as the Pirates beat Norfolk State 37-7.

Zellous completed 20 of 25 passes for 185 yards and added 60 yards rushing on seven carries for Hampton (2-1).

Norfolk State (1-3), which beat Division-II Virginia State 28-23 last time out, is winless in three games against D-I (FBS or FCS) opponents by a cumulative score of 103-33.

The Spartan offense had trouble all day, with just 104 total yards. Quarterback Jalen Daniels finished 6/12 for 46 yards. Norfolk State's rushing attack, dominant in the Spartans opener against FAMU, struggled as well with 30 carries for 58 yards.

Hampton took the opening kickoff and chewed more than 8 minutes off the clock with a 20-play, 75-yard drive but, despite and 3-yard run by Robinson on fourth-and-2 from the 4, settled for a 22-yard field goal by Brian Csehoski. Norfolk State went three-and-out on the ensuing drive and following a 17-yard punt by Noah Tracey, the Pirates went 43 yards in nine plays to take a 9-0 lead after a Zellous scored on a 3-yard run and Csehoski missed the PAT attempt in the closing seconds of the first quarter.

Robinson scored on 2-yard runs in the second and third quarters and Zellous added a 1-yard TD on a QB sneak that made it 30-0 with 2 seconds left in the third quarter.

After a roughing the passer penalty negated a Hampton interception and kept a Norfolk State drive alive, Jalen Daniels threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jahee Blake to get the Spartans on the scoreboard with about 10 mintues to play.

Malcolm Mays, who replaced Zellous in the fourth quarter and finished 5-of-5 passing for 54 yards, capped the scoring when he threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Christian Greenlaw with 1:17 remaining.
