NORFOLK, Va. — LaMareon James made ODU history on September 16th when he became the first ever Monarch, and 7th college football player, to return an interception and fumble for touchdowns in the same game. While James' name will remain in Monarch record books, he has likely put on an ODU jersey for the last time. A Norfolk native and former superstar at Indian River, James announced Friday that he'll be entered the transfer portal.
James has been a very good defensive back overall in his 3 years at ODU, making honorable mention All Sun Belt this past season. It's those game changing strikes of lighting, however, that have gotten the most attention during his time in Norfolk. James also counts a 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Myrtle Beach Bowl and 4 fumble recoveries in 2023 alone, amongst his highlights.
James joins childhood friend, wide receiver Javon Harvey, in the portal. Recruiting services have generally listed around 17 ODU players in the portal thus far.
James had multiple tackles in every game this season and defended 7 passes. He also brought immense value on special teams with 1,346 kickoff return yards and two touchdowns over his 3 years at ODU. He'll now (most likely) leave the 757 for the first time in his football career.
