Grant Wilson Named Week 1 Starting Quarterback at ODU for Second Straight Year

The Monarchs haven't had a QB open consecutive seasons since Taylor Heinicke in 2014, until now

NORFOLK, Va. — The "announcement" came without much hoopla.

"I don't know that I need to announce anything, Grant will start the first game. Grant's ready to go and we feel very comfortable with where he's at. I feel very confident in obviously having him back," said head Coach Ricky Rahne.

Wilson started 11 games for the Monarchs in 2023, throwing for 1,249 yards with 17 TD's and 8 interceptions. He'll also be entering his 3rd year in offensive coordinator Kevin Decker's offense, having spent a year at Fordham with the coach.

Rahne spoke about his improved conviction when throwing the ball and increased efficiency in his pocket movement. Throughout camp, however, Rahne has also spoken about Wilson's improved trust in the coaching staff and leadership with this teammates.

Wilson echoed that sentiment as well, "The biggest thing is I've been comfortable leading. I don't have to do anything extra or say anything extra. Just by the way I act and things that I do I can lead just by being myself. That's helped me a lot, getting the guys chemistry in the building, getting guys to watch extra film, that sort of the thing."

The experience that comes with a second year behind center is unfamiliar in ODU's recent history. The Monarchs haven't had the same week 1 starter since Taylor Heinicke's run from 2012 to 2014. For nine straight years a different QB has taken started the first game of the season, now they can hope Wilson's consistency can lead to more consistent results in the win column.
