NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- What exactly is a Maury Commodore? We talked to Maury's Athletic Director, Edward Boyd to find out…"Matthew F. Maury was a Commodore in the U.S. Navy and as the school is named after him they adopted his rank as the Mascot."
How did the school go about designing the logo and picking colors? "Colors were chosen in 1912 and the Mascot in 1918, rarely did schools have mascots before then. The Mascot is easy how they picked the Commodore, but your guess is as good as mine about the colors," said Boyd.
What does it mean to be a Commodore as a student athlete? "It means you are to represent the oldest and best high school in Norfolk. Not only do we excel on the playing field, but we also excel in the classroom," said Boyd.
