YORKTOWN, Va. (WVEC) -- Founded in 1996, Grafton High School's mascot is known as the "Clippers."

How did the name originate? We spoke with Grafton's Athletic Director, Laura Sutton to find out….

"A committee of students from Tabb and York who would be attending the new school along with faculty, parents and central office staff researched mascots and made the color recommendations."

What exactly is a Clipper? "A Clipper is a ship that majestically and powerfully sailed the waterways – one of the fastest ships," said Sutton.

The logo was first designed by the first coaching staff and has evolved over the years.

"People do not really know what a Clipper truly is and the question is asked quite a bit. We use a Captain called "Big Red" as the mascot at games because would be tough to have a ship," said Sutton.

What does it mean to be a Grafton Clipper? "We are a very strong community in all academic and athletic areas here at Grafton and I believe all are proud to be called "Clippers," said Sutton.
