Charles 'Lefty' Driesell, basketball coach and Norfolk native, dies at 92

Driesell began his career in Hampton Roads, coaching at Granby High School and Newport News High School.

NORFOLK, Va. — Charles "Lefty" Driesell, retired basketball coach and Norfolk native, passed away Saturday morning. He was 92.

Driesell began his career in Hampton Roads, coaching at Granby High School and Newport News High School.

He then moved on to college ball. He coached at the University of Maryland before becoming head coach at James Madison University.  He then moved to Georgia State until 2033 when he officially retired.

When Driesell retired, he was the fourth-winningest Division I men's basketball coach of all time. He remains the 16th-winningest head coach in history.

Driesell was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
