POQUOSON, Va. (WVEC) -- A high school football player was hurt seriously Friday as the Islanders took on Jamestown High School.

Poquoson High School senior Nathan Ward experienced a head injury during the game.

Number 87 Ward is a running back/defensive back for Poquoson.

His family issued a statement Saturday"

Nathan Ward is currently recovering from surgery due to a head injury after Friday night's football game. Nate has been responsive and is continuing to make great strides in his recovery. He is a strong young man and has been such a fighter throughout all of this. Our family can never repay the generous outpouring of support. We live in such a loving community and feel extremely blessed for all the prayers.

Several pictures on social media showed the community support for Ward and his family. Those pictures included one that showed a group of people praying for the senior and one of a sign at a local convenience store offering thoughts and prayers for the entire Ward Family.
