NORFOLK, Va. — The Maury Commodores ran roughshod over their competition in 2023 and the result was them winning the Class 5 state title for their first since 2019. On Friday, the team was honored with a pep rally at the school.
They would be likes of Highland Springs in Class 6 who was a state finalist. They also beat Wise, the state title team in Maryland as well as the defending Class 4 champion in Dinwiddie. During the regular season, the Commodores outscored their competition 579-27 to go with 6 shutouts.
Head coach Dyrri McCain talked about the feeling of being celebrated at homecoming compared to a championship.
"It's good to have a pep rally for homecoming", he said. "But it's even more special to have something of your own. The guys to put in that time to work hard. The homecoming pep rally is something that's for everybody and mainly football, but when it's guys putting in a lot of work and that celebration with the students means a lot."
What's scary is that Maury posseses the #2 player in Virginia for the Class of 2024, and for 2025 the #1 and #10 players in the state as well. They'll only get better.
