Phantoms Play for 4th Straight State Title, Third Straight Undefeated Season

Phoebus takes on Varina Saturday at Liberty University

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The biggest stage in high school football is normal to the Phoebus Phantoms class of 2025.

"Honestly man, I got kind of comfortable going to states. It's just an every year thing, honestly we just go there and finish the job."

When senior wide receiver Romeir Smith says it's an "every year thing"...he means that literally. His class has never played a season for the Phantoms that DIDN'T end in a state championship. Game winning interceptions, blowouts, walk-off touchdown passes; by any means necessary they have taken home the trophy.

On Saturday they'll play to make it an even 4 for 4, taking on Varina in the Class 4 Virginia State Championship at Liberty University.

Phoebus is 13-0, having outscored 582-58 this season. They're led by sophomore quarterback Maurikus Banks and senior running back Davion Roberts. Varina is 12-1, their only loss coming in the season opener to Indian River in overtime.

A win by the Phantoms would mark the second 4 peat in school history. It would also be the 3rd straight undefeated season, with the senior class only having lost one game in their high school careers.
