CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Great Bridge High School football coach Pete Gale resigned less than a week after he missed a game against Indian River because of a suspension.
"I am grateful to have spent the last 10 years at this great high school. I am looking forward to seeing how my future unfolds and the doors God opens for me," said Gale.
According to Chesapeake Public Schools, assistant Olin Mansfield will serve as interim coach for the rest of this season. Great Bridge plays at Western Branch on Friday.
According to the Virginian Pilot, Gale wrote an email to the paper stating that he will no longer coach the Wildcats.
"Today I resigned from the head football coaching position at Great Bridge High School," Gale wrote. "Without going into the series of events that led up to this difficult decision, I would like to publically (sic) thank all of the young men who wore the green and gold and all of our supporters."
Gale was in his 11th season at the high school. His record was 54-45.
