NORFOLK, Va. — The Indian River Braves have won seven consecutive games capping it off on Friday night with a resounding upset over unbeaten Green Run who moved to 12-1. The Stallions are two-time defending Class 5 Region A champs.
The game was deadlocked at 7 for over two quarters after both teams scored touchdowns in the first 12 minutes. A combination of messy offense along with strong defense kept each team from adding more points throughout the remainder of the game, that is until the final 12 seconds of the game.
Late in the fourth, Braves quarterback Tyler Allison connected with Malachi Hinton on third down to begin moving the ball downfield. Later in the drive, Green Run made a critical mistake and was called for a face mask which essentially set up the Braves in field goal range.
With 12 seconds on the clock, Indian River's Noah Martinez drilled a 30-yard field goal to break the tie and put his team up 10-7 and the Braves sidelined erupted in pandemonium. The Braves will travel to face another unbeaten team in the Maury Commodores next Saturday at Powhatan Field at 2 pm in the state semifinal.
The Commodores earned a spot there after a big beating over Warwick on Friday night. Going up against one of the top defenses in the state who had shut out eight opponents this season and allowed just three touchdowns, Maury was still able to find its way to the end zone in no time going up 41-6 in just the first half.
The Commodores went on to win it 48-20, capturing their sixth straight regional title under head coach Dyrri McCain. Warwick ends their season 11-2.
In Class 2 Region A, Poquoson opened with two quick scores and a safety to go up 16-0 over Amelia County. Ryan Burke and Baker Green scored the first two touchdowns of the game for the Bull Islanders. Amelia County then countered scoring on 3rd & 38 to get on the board trailing 16-6.
The Bull Islanders however always had a response. They extended their lead 37-6 at halftime and went on to win 57-6 en route to the program's third Class 2 Region A championship in the past four seasons.
