Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith talks to players at his alma mater Booker T. Washington

The NFL's career all-time sack leader spoke with the team on the eve of their season opener on Thursday night at Petersburg.

NORFOLK, Va. — Booker T. Washington is one of many area high schools opening their football season on Thursday night. They'll take to the road to face Petersburg at 7pm, but not without some Pro Football Hall of Fame words of wisdom.

Norfolk native and Bookers alumnus Bruce Smith spoke at the team's final practice on Wednesday afternoon. He, like many of the players on the team, once roamed the hallways like he did at the school.

Hard to believe that the former Virginia Tech Hokie had considered going with his passion for hoops as opposed to the gridiron.

"I had no desire to play football. My love was for basketball", said the 61 year old. "Coach gave me an ultimatum. Coach (Zeke) Avery said you want to play basketball, you've got to play football and then I had other dear friends that encouraged me to come out and play".

Assistant head coach Justin Robinson added having someone of Smith's stature carries plenty of weight with players.

"Coming from Booker T. Washington, the kids really haven't grasped the understanding of his legacy, but he's a product like them".

The NFL's career sack leader wanted to make sure the players were guided in the right direction so they can pursue their dreams like he did.

"The decisions they make today will affect their lifestyle and their success".

Bookers head coach Mason Williams, who's in his first season with the school says what Smith did for his team was impactful.

"Especially from someone who's walked in their shoes, traveled along that path. To come in with his wisdom as well as a guy who's reached the mountain top. The pinnacle of athletics".
