HAMPTON, Va. — In what was probably one of the best high school games of the season, the Phoebus/Warwick showdown lived up to the billing. The Phantoms had to rally from 17-14 deficit against the Raiders when sophomore quarterback Maurikus Banks converted on a 4th down pass in Phoebus territory to Romier Smith.
It led to Banks then connecting with Mhakyi Hill for an 11 yard touchdown in what would be the game winner. Phantoms (9-0) won 27-17 over the Raiders and not only capturing the Peninsula District title, but extending their current win streak to 45 straight games and 66 in a row in the district.
Phoebus jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when offensive lineman Markus Hopson went over from a yard out. Banks would get his first touchdown pass of the game when he had a 32 yard toss to Smith for a 14-0 advantage.
The Raiders (9-1), would battle back to take their first lead of the game when Saeed Williams Jr. tossed a 53 yard touchdown pass to Keon Batt and gave them a three point lead.
The near capacity crowd at Darling Stadium enjoyed every bit of a thriller.
