The Granby Comets have been on a meteoric rise over the last 2 seasons. From 2018-2022 the program won 4 games total. Last season, the first under head coach Kendal Jefferson, they went 7-4 with a playoff appearance. The improvement has gone into hyperdrive in 2024, with the Comets starting 5-0 with 5 shutouts.
The Lake Taylor Titans have 3 state titles since 2012 as Coach Hank Sawyer turned the program into one of Hampton Roads' best. The Titans have struggled in 2024, with a 1-4 record to start the season.
It made for an especially intriguing Game of the Week, on top of the fact that these are two Eastern District teams.
The first quarter closely resembled Granby's season as a whole. The Comets jumped out to an early 21-0 lead with quarterback J'shaun Reddin throwing multiple touchdown passes. Their defensive line was repeatedly in the Titan backfield.
As it looked like the game was getting out of reach, when the Titans came storming back. A long touchdown run from quarterback Kevin Adams broke the Comet's shouout streak and gave Lake Taylor's offense a spark. The Granby lead was twice cut to two scores in the second quarter, but the Comet's offense routinely responded. Each Lake Taylor touchdown was met with a quick and decisive touchdown pass from Reddin, putting the game out of reach at 42-13 when the 1st half ended.
Granby would tack on a few more scores in the second half for a 62-13 final.
The Comets move to 6-0 while Lake Taylor heads home after putting up the first 2 touchdowns scores against Granby this season.
