Commodores football is chasing history

With a win in Saturday's Class 5 championship, Maury would capture back to back titles for the first time program history. The school opened in 1911.

NORFOLK, Va. — Maury head coach Dyrri McCain has had the date December 14th, 2024 etched in his team's memories after last season's Class 5 state championship win. There was a method to what he was trying to get his team to understand.

The goal is now in sight. A win over Briar Woods on Saturday from James Madison University's Bridgeforth Stadium and they would capture back to back titles for the first time in program history. The school opened in 1911.

"I think we have a different motivation", he said. "I think there's a different goal to chase. I think we've heard enough about not being the same team as last year, so we want to put that to rest on Saturday".

Commodores linebacker, Carlton "CJ" Smith came back home after spending time at Baltimore powerhouse St. Frances Academy. The University of Maryland signee has enjoyed this season.

"Its been an amazing experience", he said. "So many ups and downs, but we always learn how to overcome".

Maury's quest for that title will have to be done without senior tight end and Clemson signee Ari Watford. He injured his ankle in their state semifinal win over Green Run. His teammates have said they've got his back.

"I think the whole team is trying to win and go back to back for Ari before he leaves".

Sophomore quarterback Au'Tori Newkirk added, "We're just going to go out there and get him another ring".
