Va. Tech looks to take advantage of 23rd ranked Tulane who's missing key players

The Hokies face the Green Wave at 2pm and are looking for their first winning season since 2019 when they went 8-5.

Virginia Tech's football team doesn't have to worry about a coaching change or transfer portal issues like some schools who are still bowling. The Hokies are facing #23 Tulane in the Military Bowl from Annapolis, Maryland on Wednesday at 2pm.

For Tech quarterback Kyron Drones it's all about just concentrating on the game itself. He's thrown for six touchdowns in his last six quarters that included their 55-17 drubbing of archrival Virginia in their season finale.

Drones is hoping with a win over the Green Wave, it can carry into next season.

"It means a lot", he says. "We're 6-6 right now. You don't want to go into the off season 6-7. You want to go on a winning record and if we get that going. It's just building more momentum."

Head coach Brent Pry added, "The games with these top caliber teams, we didn't do it. We didn't play well", he says. "This is an opportunity to make a statement."

The Hokies are facing a Green Wave (11-2) team that will be shorthanded. Their head coach Willie Fritz resigned after their American Athletic Conference championship game loss to Southern Methodist to take the top job at the University of Houston.

Outgoing offensive coordinator Slade Nagle is the interim head coach for the the game. Then there's the matter of six key Tulane players that are out for various reasons that includes quarterback Michael Pratt. He's the school's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns. He's focusing his attention on this spring's upcoming NFL Draft. So how will Coach Pry and his team prepare?

"As coaches you just innately you want to know everything you can. Study, study, study", he noted. "It's still about how we play and what we do".
